Oct 25, 2017 Clausings are solid machines, as are WellsIndex and Sharp Sharps are Taiwanese, but well made. IMO, the best machines youre likely to find stateside are Laguns. There are others out there, like Tree, ACRA, Atrump. In general, avoid the Asian machines, even in full size. They just dont go the distance, save for the Sharps.
Milling machine For whatever its worth, I bought a WT 6X26 mill two years ago and it has done everything I have asked of it. Of course a larger, more expensive, heavier machine would be better but the 6X26 is very capable. I have not machined a 1911 frame but have no doubt that it would do the job.

Apr 08, 2020 Hey Strykervet. Ive got both a Grizzly lathe G4003G and Mill G0757Z. Both seem to be rigid and accurate enough to do any Gunsmithing work. Ive been extremely pleased with BOTH machines. As mentioned above, your real cost comes in the form of tooling to go with said machines.

Feb 11, 2003 The Sherline is a smaller, lighter machine that cannot work as hard as a larger mill. And the aspect of tooling is an excellent point any mill you might find with an R8 spindle taper will give access to a much broader and cheaper range of tooling.
